New York Times Columnist Carlo Lozada in Conversation with Paul Elie

On March 13, 2025, the Journalism Program and the Georgetown Humanities Initiative welcomed Carlo Lozada, columnist for the New York Times, in conversation with Paul Elie, Senior Fellow with the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, author, and regular contributor to The New Yorker.

Carlos Lozada is a columnist for The New York Times, based in Washington. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 2019 while with The Washington Post. In his columns and in The Washington Book—recently published in paperback—he brilliantly interprets current events by scrutinizing the documents, books, missives, and other texts involved, striving to get a deeper sense of the heart of the matter than is typically available in the news cycle.

The conversation, which took place in the Georgetown Humanities conference room, focused on Lozada’s book, the recent events in the capital and the world (and the media’s assessments of them), and the challenges of literary journalism in this moment—the swift pace of the news, the erosion of standards of truth and fairness, and the tension between a personal voice and outlook and the expectations of a truly global readership.

Prof. Rebecca Sinderbrand, Director of the Journalism Program, introduced the event and the speakers.
