Georgetown Humanities Welcomes Professor Mary Roberts as its first Royden B. Davis Visiting Professor

In the Fall 2025 semester, Professor Mary Roberts joined the Georgetown Humanities Initiative and the Department of Art and Art History as the first Royden B. Davis Visiting Scholar in the Humanities.

Mary Roberts

A professor of art history and 19th-century studies at the University of Sydney, Professor Roberts specializes in modern Ottoman Art and European Orientalism. On these interdisciplinary topics she has published numerous award-winning books and articles.

In her first semester at Georgetown, Professor Roberts taught the course “Ottomans and Orientalists: 1798-1910” and is working on her next book, on the Crimean War drawings of French painter Constantin Guys for the Illustrated London News. The book considers the ways in which these drawings mediated the representation of conflict, diplomacy, and Istanbul’s urban modernity.

In the Spring semester, Professor Roberts will give a plenary talk on her current research.

Professor Roberts is one of three distinguished Davis scholars in the Georgetown College of Arts and Sciences for the 2025-26 academic year. You can read more about them here:

We wish Professor Roberts all the best for her research and teaching!
